Client’s AMD FX-6100 Build & Killer Khan’s FX-6100 Build Update

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Hey Folks,

This week’s post will be about two AMD FX-6100 systems, the first one is a build for a client and the second one is an update on Killer Khan’s Bulldozer based gaming rig.

Over the weekend I did a build for a client. They wanted a computer for video editing.

I started doing a video for this build but unfortunately the battery in the camera died so all I have is the intro. Once I get it, I will post it on the Overclocking.ca YouTube Channel. I will post some pics regarding this build further down in the post. Now onto the parts.

CPU: AMD FX-6100 3.3GHz
We decided to go with an AMD Bulldozer based build as this six core CPU would be the best bang for the buck and best suited for this type of PC.

MOBO: Asus M5A97 AM3+ AMD 970
This is a great motherboard and since this isn’t a gaming system we opted for the 970 chipset and saved some money instead of going with the 990FX chipset. We wanted a new motherboard that would support the FX series chip without having to do a BIOS update. Since we were installing a discrete graphics card we didn’t need a board with integrated graphics. (more…)

Introductory Video – Spring 2012 Build

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Last night I did the my first video for the Overclocking.ca YouTube channel. In the video I talk about Overclocking.ca, about the upcoming Sandy Bridge build this spring and do a little review of the Bitfenix Alchemy sleeved extension cables.

I am going to start doing a build log, I will have the first post up for it in the weeks to come. It will basically be outlying the parts I will be using and why I chose those particular parts. (more…)

AMD Phenom II X4 B40

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Back in the late part of 2010, I decided to pick up an AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz triple core processor, to see if I could get the 4th core to unlock. I did some research that quite a few were getting the 4th core to unlock and run stable.

These processors started life off as a Phenom II X4 (Denab) quad core. During the quality testing if there was an issue with one of the cores, they would  either lock the 4th core and sell it as a Phenom II X3 triple core or they would physically cut the L3 Cache and sell it as an Athlon II X3 triple core. Sometimes you could get really lucky if there was demand for the triple core processor and all four cores worked perfectly. (more…)
