AMD Phenom II X4 B40

January 25th, 2012

Back in the late part of 2010, I decided to pick up an AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz triple core processor, to see if I could get the 4th core to unlock. I did some research that quite a few were getting the 4th core to unlock and run stable.

These processors started life off as a Phenom II X4 (Denab) quad core. During the quality testing if there was an issue with one of the cores, they would  either lock the 4th core and sell it as a Phenom II X3 triple core or they would physically cut the L3 Cache and sell it as an Athlon II X3 triple core. Sometimes you could get really lucky if there was demand for the triple core processor and all four cores worked perfectly. Read the rest of this entry »

CPU Lapping Guide

January 20th, 2012

Lapping is a process in which you sand down the ISH of the processor to get a better heat transfer.

*Important: Lapping your processor and/or heatsink will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Overclocking.ca does not take any liability if you destroy your CPU by lapping it too much. When it comes to lapping use common sense and don’t use any power sanders.

Lapping your processor and/or heatsink is a great, safe and free way of decreasing the operating temperature of your processor. By decreasing the operating temperature of the CPU this will potentially allow you to get a higher overclock. When you put your heatsink on the IHS of the heatsink there are little gaps that can allow air through and not make perfect contact with the CPU. By lapping you are making the surface as flat as possible to allow the best heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink. Read the rest of this entry »

PC Timeline

January 19th, 2012

The interesting thing about computer technology is how fast it has advanced. Over the last 10 years we have gone from single core processors to 12 core processors.  Most of us in the enthusiast community are using quad core or hexa core based systems.  I was thinking about all of the systems I have had over the last 10 years and decided to create a PC Timeline.
